Consecration for a Crossing (Joshua 3:1-17)

“When we walk with the Lord, In the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way, While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey.”

So begins one of the most loved and theologically sound songs ever penned. In beautiful imagery and flowing harmony is a profound truth: the blessings that can be found in God are given to those who will place their trust in Him and obey His commands.

The children of Israel faced a “trust and obey” moment. Standing as they were on the shores of the rushing flood-stage Jordan River, they were told that on the morrow they would see that the Lord would do wonders among them (v. 5).

The morning light revealed the ark borne by the Levites into the flowing waters that miraculously stopped upstream as if suddenly a dam had appeared. Put yourself in those sandals. What are you thinking as you step off of that bank and down into the ravine that moments ago literally swelled with angry current?

On that far shore, they would see the blessings God promised to them long ago: a land flowing with milk and honey, a new home, a peaceful prosperity for generations to come. However, between themselves and those blessings was a challenge to trust and obey.

We too look at a shoreline of blessings just beyond the river of this life, promised land foretold long ago, a place of peaceful rest, not for generations but for eternity. What lies between this promised land and us?

“Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel crossed over on dry ground” (Joshua 3:17).
