Only By God’s Word?

[216 words]

“In everything he walked in the ways of his father Asa and did not stray from them; he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there” (1 Kings 22:43).

Jehoshaphat did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. Sounds great, right? Except for that one word that follows in the next statement: however. “The high places, however, were not removed ….” This is similar to the Reformation of the 1500’s. Men such as Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli made great strides to fix what had gone wrong in Christianity over many centuries but fell short of restoring right worship and living. Like Jehoshaphat, they can be commended, yes, for their courage and for doing “what was right in the eyes of the Lord,” but that word however is attached to their legacy. The high places, however, were not removed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. We, who hold up Scripture, and not the doctrines and edicts of men, as our only rule of faith today struggle still to persuade the lost to throw off all the religious trappings of men.

Do you worship and live only by God’s Word?
