Snowbound

[237 words]

December 14, 2016, in Albany, Oregon, a homeowner went outside after a winter storm to an unwelcome surprise. Lying on his driveway, was a fellow whose description sounded a lot like me. He was about my height and weight and age. He even had a beard like mine. He had some cash on him but no I.D.

The fellow was dead. A layer of snow and ice covered him. There were no signs of foul play. He just died…in a stranger’s driveway.

There was no abandoned car nearby and no one seemed to know who he was or why he was in the neighborhood. Was he lost? Was he looking for a warm place to stay? Was he just out for a stroll and the cold over-took him?

The fact is, life is fleeting. The Bible says: “You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (James 4:14b). None of us know when we will step into eternity. The big question is … where will you spend that eternity?

Consider these verses from the Good News Translation of the Bible:

“Listen! This is the hour to receive God’s favor; today is the day to be saved!” (2 Cor. 6:2b).

“Make good use of every opportunity you have …” (Eph. 5:16a).

“The one thing required of such servants is that they be faithful to their master” (1 Cor. 4:2).
