The Greatest and Foremost

[168 words]

When a lawyer asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment in the law, Jesus answered: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and foremost commandment.” The second is like it; “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22.37-39).

In the complexities of life, we can lose sight of these two principles which remain part of the New Covenant. When we are wronged, hurt, maligned, persecuted, treated unfairly or neglected by others, we need to remember these two commandments:

Love the Lord your God with all your might.

Love your neighbor as yourself.

We need to carry them in our hearts and minds every day, before we respond to others, as we respond to others, and after we respond to others. So many problems can be avoided if we love the Lord and love others.
