Natural Disasters

[221 words]

A few days ago, the USA Today headlines read: “Worst flooding since Hurricane Matthew swamps N. Carolina.” Several people lost their lives in this weather event. I followed the news because my wife’s sister and brother-in-law live in that state.

The flooding also brought to mind, two massive floods from 2005. That’s when two level five hurricanes hit Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and other Gulf coast areas. The final death toll was nearly 2000.

A century ago, such events would have been dubbed “acts of God.” Today, people raise the question, “Where was God when this happened?” And they use this as an excuse to doubt the existence of the God of Love found in the Bible.

There are some foundational truths that we must remember as we contemplate such disasters.

God does not do evil (Isaiah 6:3; Rev. 4:8; James 1:13; 1 John 1:5; 1 Peter 1:15-16).

God is love and everything He does, He does out of love (1 John 4:7-19; Rom. 5:8; Eph. 2:4-7, etc.).

When such events occur, there are some things we can do: First, pray! Second, help those who are in need if possible. Third, pray some more knowing that God is ultimately in control and He loves you with all His heart.
