The March 2014 issue of Reader s Digest had an article by Robert Powell titled, “The Psychic, the Novelist, and the $17 Million Scam.” It is the true story of a writer who went to a psychic “on a whim” and would end up losing $17 million. The novelist was bored, had been depressed and was facing a divorce. She had a few minutes to waste and turned to the psychic for advice. The psychic was a third generation charlatan who knew how to take advantage of people with problems and how to fleece victims out of their money.
What do you do when you have extra time on your hand? Where do you tum when you are bored? To whom do you go when depressed? The night Jesus was betrayed He was “exceedingly sorrowful and deeply distressed.” I would not say that he was bored, but He had a little time before Judas arrived; He spent that time in prayer (Matthew 26:36-39).
Have the mind of Christ in times of crisis. Psychics know nothing and only add to sorrow. Jesus prayed and an angel came to strengthen Him (Luke 22:43).
