Filled to Overflowing

[203 words]

You have probably had the unfortunate experience of overfilling a glass or a cup. You got distracted and looked away only to realize in a moment that the glass you were filling had run over! It makes for an unpleasant clean up to be done.

However, to be overflowing spiritually does not create a mess, but an abundant life. Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). That is the opposite of meager, or paltry, and indicates a life that is super-abundant.

The only way to have such an overflowing spiritual life is to whole-heartedly love and serve the Good Shepherd. Paul taught us to “walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Col. 1:10). An abundant life in Christ does not come by being sparing in our devotion and works. We must aim at a life fully pleasing to Christ!

My prayer is that we all may achieve the overabundance of joy, peace, and confidence that comes to the dedicated Christian, so that we can say, “My cup runs over” (Psa. 23:5).
