First Kings chapter 3 records the time God came to King Solomon in a dream and said, “Ask! What shall I give you?” Solomon’s first thought was that God had been kind to his father David, and had also give David an heir to sit on the throne. In his humility, Solomon admitted that he did not feel confident to lead the people of God. So he asked God to give him an understanding heart, able to discern between good and evil. Because he didn’t ask for long life, great riches, or destruction for his enemies, God gave Solomon the wisdom he desired, but also things he didn’t ask for: honor and riches. If you could have anything in the world, what would you ask for?
