There Was a Man…

[405 words]

There was a man
Who walked this land
And passed through Galilee.
He crossed the fields,
Plucked corn for meals
And walked upon the sea.

Despised of men,
Yet without sin,
He taught them truth and love.
With smiling face
He told of grace
Which came from God above.

Three years He taught
To turn from naught
To riches in the sky,
To turn from sin
And start again
To trust the God on high.

The chosen race
Had shown disgrace
And needed to repent.
He chose twelve men
From the world of sin
And with His gospel sent.

While serving Christ,
They were enticed,
But followed all the way.
They stood steadfast
Until at last
The mob took Him away.

He was abused,
Falsely accused,
When brought to judgment’s seat.
The mob’s demand
Got out of hand.
Their claim they did repeat.

But Pilate found
No solid ground
On which to make a charge.
To please the crowd
Who cried aloud
He erred in judgment large.

“Which one shall I
Release to die?
You choose between the two.”
With one accord
They chose my Lord;
No other one would do.

If they just knew
He would review
Their lives on Judgment Day,
I wonder, then,
Which would have been
Their choice of whom to slay.

He then was led
With bended head
To Calvary’s place of woe.
What could they gain
From all this pain
Inflicted by the foe?

His chosen few
Then left His view
And stood a distant far.
Each in his heart
Chose to depart.
This act their lives would scar.

As Peter cried,
Because he lied,
His heart was full of grief.
Could he deny
The Christ so high
In whom he had belief?

Was it too late
For time to wait
To rectify this wrong?
Or must he face
A self-disgrace
Throughout his life so long.

Before Christ died,
He set aside
A feast for us to keep.
This is the bread
Of which He said
That everyone should eat.

The debt He paid
So well portrayed
In this the fruit of the vine.
Should always be
So vividly
Implanted in our mind.

This was His plea
“Remember me
When you observe this feast.”
What thoughts have you
Of Calvary’s view
Are they utmost, or least?

Will you today
This One betray
Or crucify anew?
Will you discern,
Or from Him tum?
The choice is up to you.
