What is the Point of My Life?

[347 words]

Most people, at some point, have wondered about their purpose in life. Whether due to their environment, or due to things that happen (or don’t happen) to them, they begin to doubt their own worth. Job expressed these sorts of doubt when he wished that he had never been born (Job 10:18-19). In his grief, his vision was clouded to the goal that God had for him.

Many in the Bible rightly came to the conclusion that the real goal of life is to “fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all” (Ecc. 12:13).

Some may ask, however, “Why should I serve God?” Using Psalm 139:13-16 as a basis, notice three facts about our relationship with God that should cause us to desire to serve Him.

We should serve Him because He created us (Psalm 139:13-14). This passage says we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” by the Creator. As a master craftsmen, God has designed us and brought us into being. We should serve Him out of joyful thankfulness for the gift of life!

We should serve Him because He knows us (Psalm 139:15). God knows everything about us. This entire Psalm, in fact, is about the perfect knowledge of God. He knows us completely, inside and out. And because of that, we can trust Him fully! It is easy to serve, when we trust the Creator!

We should serve Him because He loves us (Psalm 139:16). This passage says God wrote our days in His book before they even arrived. As a loving father might look forward to the things his child would do, so God laid the days out before us in love. What a gift of love!

Because He created us, He knows that we would need a Savior, so in love He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, as a gift that we might have eternal life. Ultimately, the point of your life is to be saved and live eternally with our loving Father! What a great motivation to serve Him!
