Are You Prepared?

[261 words]

“But the day of the lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness“ (2 Peter 3:10-11).

Abraham Davenport served as the Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives. One day in 1789, the sky of Hartford darkened suddenly and some of the representatives, glancing out the windows, were afraid that the end of the world was at hand.

Quieting the uproar for an immediate adjournment, Davenport rose and said, “The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, then there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought.”

The Day of Judgment will come one day. When it does, how will our Lord find you? Will you be the sort of person Peter said “you ought to be in holy conduct and godliness?” When Jesus comes to reward His servants, will He find us watching, with our lamps all trimmed and bright (Luke 12:37-38)? Can we say we are ready, brother, ready for the soul’s bright home? Are we ready for the future Day of Judgment?

The day of the Lord will come like a thief. So don’t be caught unprepared to meet your God!
