Who Are These People?

[261 words]

You hear about them on the news, you read about them in magazines. But who are the Kardashians? They must be someone important, perhaps like Lady Gaga. Really, who has a name Gaga? I must be out of touch, too old to be up with the newest fad. But should I really even care? Five years from now there will be a new Gaga of some kind that will move the masses that follow such things. Such people draw a great deal of press with very little substance.

Allow me to tell you about the people that touch my heart: The young girl on the St. Jude’s ad that is dying of cancer. The grandmother that is struggling to take care of three grandchildren. The young soldier that had his legs blown off during one of our too many wars.

The Gaga ‘s will come and go, and who will note their passing? The Kardashians will be replaced by some other silly group filled with their own sense of self-importance. May God forgive us for not seeing the things that truly matter. For eyes that are blind to real needs and real pain. May God help us to wake up and say, “Why should I care how many times some Hollywood actor has gone back into drug rehab, when little children often don’t have enough to eat?”

Truly God helps us to wake up to what truly matters in this life. We need to divorce ourselves from the culture that would make the mundane important and the insipid of grave concern.
