The strongest and greatest of all things is love. Jesus said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” (John 13:34). At Corinth, love did not abound for God nor brethren. Thus, the wearing of human names (1 Corinthians 1:12), fornication (5:1), lawsuits among Christians (6:1), and misuse of the Lord’s Supper (11:20) were some of the things that resulted. Are any of these indications of lovelessness with us today?
Like faith, love is evidenced by works. Love’s labors are listed by Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8: Love is patient, kind, humble, unselfish, open-minded, truth-centered, optimistic, etc. Love for God and man is as necessary today as in Paul’s time. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). If you love the Lord, obey His gospel (Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
