“Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way” (Proverbs 3:5-6, GNT).
One of the hardest things to do is trust in someone else’s opinion when everything you know or think you know is saying something else. You have believed something to be true all your life and now someone is telling you something different. It doesn’t make sense to you, so you reject it.
Once, many years ago, I mentioned the location of the North Star was in the constellation Ursa Minor (also known as the Little Dipper). However, one man in the audience was insistent that the Little Dipper was overhead and not north. He mistook the Pleiades for the Little Dipper — a common mistake. It didn’t matter that I taught in an observatory for seven years or that I directed that observatory for four years, he knew a “fact” and nothing would change his mind.
In the case of this fellow, it really didn’t matter to him. However, for a hiker lost in the woods, the mistake could cost him his life.
In Proverbs 3, Solomon reminds us that God knows everything. When what we know – or think we know – contradicts what God knows, we had better trust in Him. And, when we do this, the Lord will show us the right way to live our lives.
