Lessons from the Ant

[229 words]

The Book of Proverbs has so many wonderful lessons for us today. One of my favorite passages is Proverbs 6:6-11 wherein King Solomon said:

“Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, Provides her supplies in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest. How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep–So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.”

The ant is truly one of God’s most remarkable creations. They are a model of industry, organization, and hard work. It seems like hard-working people are getting harder and harder to find these days. Many people want to be paid well, but few want to work hard for their money. Too many people are content to live off the government, the church, or charities. Far too many people think the way to wealth is a get-rich-quick scheme, a lawsuit, or the lottery, instead of good old fashioned hard work. Far too many of our citizens think the world owes them a living. Laziness is a real problem in our society.

So which of the two mentioned in Proverbs 6:6-11 do you have more in common with, the ant or the sluggard?
