Holidays are times that usually fill people with joy and offer an opportunity to create memories with family, friends, and loved ones. Sometimes, however, holidays can be difficult. For instance, Valentine’s Day.
The number one reason some people dislike Valentine’s Day is because of the emotional torture they experience if they are not in a “relationship.” They feel like they are the only ones in the world not getting flowers, candy, or a card on February 14th, and they feel overwhelmed by waves of loneliness.
It is hard to console a person who feels this way with trite pats on the back and promises that one day everything will be perfect for them. Instead, it might be helpful to remind them that God has already expressed a perfect love for us all through His Son Jesus.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ” (Eph. 2:4-5). The love God has for us is beyond anything that can be experienced from human relationships. “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God” (1 John 3:1)!
People should always be hopeful for a godly spouse, and work to develop themselves to be just that for someone else as well. However, it is even more important to realize that God through Christ Jesus has brought Christians into the most perfect and fulfilling relationship possible, and any human “Valentine” pales in comparison!
