The Prayer List

[260 words]

I’ve read it in several bulletins from many churches. It’s called “The Prayer List” and consists of the names of people who have either requested that we mention them in our prayers or who have had a request given by someone in their behalf. Of course, there is biblical precedence for this practice as the apostle Paul requested prayers from congregations on his behalf (Eph. 6:19; Col. 4:3; 1 Thess. 5:25).

“The Prayer List” is merely a convenient reminder of these requests. I know that my memory is not what it once was, so I am grateful to have a written list of the names of those who have asked our congregation to remember them in our prayers to God.

“The Prayer List” represents a great confidence in prayer. It says that those requesting and those asked to pray have a mutual belief that God will answer such requests. They believe with James that “the effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much” (James 5:16). We have reported in our congregation numerous times when our prayers have been answered regarding some individual for whom we had been praying.

Yet, “The Prayer List” is only taking up so much space in a church bulletin if the brothers and sisters do not respond to it. Perhaps its best use is this: when you get your bulletin and see “The Prayer List,” why not speak to the Father about one or all of those listed. Mention the specific request and petition the Creator of the Universe to intervene.
