In one sense, the last supper of Jesus with His disciples was a very sad occasion. Although this was a time of sorrow for Jesus, He spoke words of hope as He gave His disciples the cup to drink. He said, “I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:29).
Jesus looked ahead, beyond His death and resurrection, to that time when His kingdom, which is the church, would be set up. In His kingdom He promised to eat and drink anew with His disciples. Today we are citizens of Christ’s kingdom. Therefore as we eat and drink, we are eating with Jesus. He promised to be with us. He is just as truly here with us today as He was with the apostles in the upper room. He is with us here now invisibly, but will eat anew with us face to face in the eternal kingdom of our Lord in the new heaven and earth.
Let us be aware of the presence of the Lord today as we eat and drink this supper.
