During a time of David’s kingship, Absalom, his son, plotted a revolt against the throne. In a short time, Absalom gathered quite a force, and David decided to flee Jerusalem. Absalom and his army hotly pursued him. No doubt this was a distressing time for David. There are surely times in which we can relate – when we feel the world is closing in on us. During those times, we need to remember to look the right directions and for the right reasons. We can see what David did from his words in Psalm 3 (which is titled: “A Psalm of David when he fled from Absalom his son”):
First David Looked Around. “LORD, how they have increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me. Many are they who say of me, ‘There is no help for him in God.’” (v.1-2)
Then David Looked Back. “But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head. I cried to the LORD with my voice, and He heard me from His holy hill.” (v.3-4)
Then David Looked Up. “I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise, O LORD; Save me, O my God! For You have struck all my enemies on the cheekbone; You have broken the teeth of the ungodly.” (v.5-7)
Finally David Looked Ahead. “Salvation belongs to the LORD. Your blessing is upon Your people.” (v.8)
It is not only important to look the right direction, but for the right reason. Some people look around and let fear rule. They look back and let failure drag them further down. They look up and see the clouds instead of the shining sun beyond them. They look ahead and drown themselves in worrying about the potential worst.
Let us learn to look like David did. Look around and assess your situation realistically. Look back remembering all the ways God helped us in the past. Look up and realize that God is still in control. And look ahead at the blessings, salvation, and eternity in heaven that He has prepared for us.
