Most of us know about a man named Haman. He was the villain of the book of Esther. Haman was a man of pride and his life shows us the truthfulness of God’s word. Proverbs 13:10 says, “By pride comes nothing but strife.” When Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman his pride was hurt and so he determined to kill all Jews (Esther 2:5-6). Pride produces strife. But there is another problem with pride: “when pride comes then comes shame…” (Proverbs 11:2). Haman was greatly shamed when the king told him to honor Mordecai (Esther 6: 1-12). Haman’s haughty spirit brought him low; but Mordecai’s humility brought him honor (Proverbs 29:23). Eventually all who are filled with pride will be brought to shame. Finally, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16: 18). Haman was hanged on the gallows he had built for Mordecai (Esther 7:9, 10). What is the lesson for us? “Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up” (James 4:10).
