When I was young, there was a cigarette commercial in which a father was sitting by a tree with his child. He lit a cigarette then set the cigarette package down on the ground. Immediately the small child picked up the package. The lesson was impressive. Little children are watching their parents. Not only are they watching, but they mimic the actions of their parents.
Parents are given to children by God (Ps. 127:3). He expects parents to train their children in the best manner they can (Eph. 6:4). He knows their example is of vital importance. Parents, you need to be what you want your children to become.
Do you want them to be honest? Then you be honest.
Do you want them to be clean in their speech? Then don’t cuss.
Do you want them to be calm? Then cease your outbursts of anger.
Do you want them to be sober? Then quit doing alcohol and drugs.
Do you want them to be worshippers of God? Then attend services.
Do you want them to trust in prayer? Then pray in front of them.
Do you want them to have a strong home? Then make yours strong.
Do you want them to care for others? Then be compassionate.
Do you want them to be moral? Then live a virtuous life.
Do you want them to love God? Then keep God’s commands.
Do you want them to love their spouse? Then show them how.
Do you want them to work hard? Then don’t be lazy.
Do you want them to be responsible? Then quit blaming others.
Do you want them to be positive? Then don’t murmur and complain.
Do you want them to go to heaven? Then show them the way.
Your children will become what you are. Think about that! Are you pleased with who you are today? Are you what you want your children to become? If not, perhaps you need to make some big changes in your life.
There is a phrase found in the Bible that speaks to this subject. The phrase reads: “He walked in the ways of…” The “he” is the child. He walked in the ways of his father. Sometimes the end result was good because the father was good (2 Chron. 34:2). At other times the end result was awful because the father was awful (2 Chron. 28:2).
If you children walk in your ways, what will be the end result? Will it be good? or, will it be awful? If you are honest you know the real answer.
Parents set the proper example for your children. They will walk in your ways.
