Great Things in First Peter

[372 words]

There are at least nine different Greek words that are used in the New Testament which could be translated “great.” The word appears more than a few times in different books and letters.

As we read our Bible, some of these great things stand out. At times, even if the word “great” is not used, we know they are great by what we read about them. The letter we call First Peter could be an example. You can easily see one great thing in each chapter.

A Great Salvation To Treasure. In 1 Pet. 1:5, the apostle mentions that God’s people are kept by the power of God for salvation. In verse 6, he says it causes great rejoicing. We must take advantage of it by living obedient, holy lives.

A Great Example To Imitate. The context of 1 Pet. 2:21-23 deals with suffering. Note that He suffered for us. Even if we are not suffering as He did, we have a great example to follow. If we really follow the Lord’s great example, we become a great example to others (1 Cor. 11:1).

A Great Command To Obey. First Pet. 3:15 will certainly challenge us. Can we really answer those who see the hope we have? They will never ask about our hope unless they see something different in us. We should count it a privilege to speak about our hope.

A Great Name To Wear. Peter recognized the possibility of suffering for different reasons. We should never suffer for things mentioned in 1 Pet. 4:15. But, if we suffer while wearing the name of Christ, we must never be ashamed of that. We rejoice in the name “Christian” because it identifies us with Christ.

A Great Enemy To Resist. The first four great things were positive. This one is negative. The devil not only opposes us, he seeks to devour us. We must resist him. It will require vigilance and steadfastness. A great enemy can only be defeated by a great resolve to withstand him.

Hopefully, we can someday join in the song of Rev. 15:3, as we honor God, “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty…” Wouldn’t that be great!
