Immigration and citizenship are a hot topic in our country today. Why do many people want to come here and become a citizen of the United States? Is it for freedom, political asylum, or the opportunity for a better life? Currently, Christians have a dual citizenship. We are citizens of the earth while having our citizenship in heaven. (Philippians 3:21).
Unfortunately, as with any community or country, there are good citizens and not-so-good citizens. What does it take to be a good citizen in the kingdom of heaven while living here on earth? Here are a few of the characteristics Christians must have to be a good citizen:
• Respect. Respect leadership, others, and yourself (Heb. 13:17; 1 Peter 2:7; Phil. 2:3; 1 Cor. 3:16).
Compliance. Obey the laws and rules (John 14:15; 1 John 2:3; 1 Thes. 4:11; James 1:22).
Participation. Engage in the activities of the church (Rom. 12:10-13; 1 Cor. 15:58; Col 3:17; 2 Tim. 2:15; Heb. 10:24-25).
Stewardship: Protecting and caring for God’s blessings (Luke 16; 2-13; 1 Cor. 4:1-2; 2 Cor. 9:6-7; 1 Pet. 4:10).
Responsibility. Being accountable for one’s own actions (Rom. 4:12; Gal. 6:5,7; 1 Tim. 5:8).
Compassion. Showing compassion for one’s neighbor (Matt. 9:36; 25:34-36; Luke 10:29-37; Rom. 15:1).
Integrity. Honest and trustworthy in one’s personal dealings (Luke 3:12-13; Eph. 4:25; Col. 3:9-10; Titus 2:7).
Although this list in not conclusive, we must continually strive to develop and grow them into our character while diligently seeking God through faith (Hebrews 11:6).
