“Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, ‘Why didn’t you bring him in?’ ‘No one ever spoke the way this man does,’ the guards declared” (John 7:45-46).
Word was going around Jerusalem that Jesus might possibly be the Christ, and so those who believed themselves in control and authority and were afraid of losing it (earthly power is dependent on the will of the people), sent temple guards to arrest Him. Among the things the guards heard was Jesus declaring that which only God could do: that if they believed in Him, then streams of living water would flow from within them! Even when the crowd was divided and some wanted to seize Jesus, the temple guards (men trained to do this very task!) went back empty-handed. Their excuse? “No one ever spoke the way this man does.” Here is the limit of earthly words and earthly power. The will of man is overwhelmed by the will of God. Jesus held godly authority and spoke the words of eternal life … and these lowly grunts recognized it! Why do we wage spiritual war with earthly weapons? Or, why do we wield divine weapons as if they were toy swords?
