The purpose of our meeting at the Lord’s Table each week is to bring to remembrance the eternal plan of God to offer His Son as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. In the ages before Christ’s time, God’s people had offered animal sacrifices to have their sins rolled forward, but the blood of animals could not take away their sins. This is where God’s plan came into effect. He would offer His Son as a sacrifice and His blood would be the agent to wash away all sins.
While our hearts are filled with sorrow for the cruel method of death, for the pain and anguish which He suffered willingly in our behalf, we are grateful for the love He had for all mankind and that He willingly gave His life for our sacrifice.
The scripture tells us that we have to be worthy participants. We must prepare our minds for proper observance of this supper. We can’t enter into it lightheartedly. First Corinthians 11:28-29 says, “But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.”
