Would You Eat One?

[231 words]

I don’t know how many of you have seen nutria. But if you fish in Louisiana you have seen them. They live near the water, and look like rats. They are not native to Louisiana and can and do destroy our wetlands. There is a move to convince people to hunt, kill, and then eat them. They hunting and killing I can understand, but they have yet to convince me to eat one. But then I am amazed at what some people will eat.

There is a spiritual application to this. Jesus tells us that defilement of the person doesn’t come by what he takes into his mouth, but what his heart feasts on (Matt. 15:15-20). So in a real sense, spiritually, we are what we eat. It would do well for each of us to ask what kind of spiritual diet we have. It may in fact be making us sick!

What we see and what we hear goes into our heart and adds light or darkness to our souls. We have all seen the notice on some movies or books, “for adults only” or adult content. Those items should be marked as “poison for your mind.” Phil. 4:8 reveals the spiritual diet of a child of God. Things that are noble, pure, lovely will make a difference in how we look and feel about our world.
