In part of John’s glimpse of heaven, he saw four living creatures who did not rest from praising God saying, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come” (Rev. 4:8). In this saying of honor, three great attributes of God are given.
Holiness. God is the Holy One (Ezek 39:7). He is one hundred percent love and purity (Psa. 12:6; 1 John 4:8). He is total righteousness and is always right (Deut. 32:4). Truly He is “Holy, holy, holy.”
Omnipotence. God is the All-Mighty One (Psa. 65:6). He spoke everything into existence, creating everything out of nothing (Psa. 33:6; Heb. 11:3). His power and knowledge are limitless (Psa. 65:6; 147:5). Truly He is the “Lord God Almighty.”
Eternalness. God is the Ageless One (Psa. 90:2). He has always been around and will always be God (Mal. 3:6). Because God is eternally enduring, so is His truth and mercy (Psa. 100:5). Truly He is the One “Who was and is and is to come.”
Look at what it takes to be God: total holiness, perfect omnipotence, and merciful eternalness. Now, there are many who have claimed to be gods in the past, and many whom men have deemed to be gods, but obviously none besides the one true God has any of these attributes, let alone all of them. Think about it: God couldn’t be THE God if He didn’t have all three of these qualities. And He is all three and much more! Let us stand in awe of the awesome God! May we never cease from recognizing and praising Him as the one and only Lord God.
“Thus says the LORD…I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God” (Isa. 44:6).
