Every Christian has influence. The question is not whether we influence others, but what kind of influence we are having. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Our influence for Christ is often found in the ordinary things we choose to do every day.
We can influence others through our words. A kind word, an encouraging text, a sincere compliment, or simply taking time to listen can make a tremendous difference. Paul wrote, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification” (Ephesians 4:29). Before today is over, find someone you can encourage.
We can influence others through our actions. Galatians 6:10 says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all.” Look for someone you can help. Show kindness when it is unexpected. Be patient when others are frustrated. Treat people with respect. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness opens the door for a much greater spiritual conversation.
We can influence others through our example. People notice how Christians respond when life becomes difficult. They see how we treat our families, how we conduct ourselves at work, how we speak about others, and whether our faith follows us beyond the church building. Paul told Timothy, “Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).
We can also influence others by simply talking about Jesus. Mention something you learned from Scripture. Tell someone you are praying for them. Invite someone to worship. Share a passage that has encouraged you. Christianity should be such a natural part of our lives that speaking about Christ is natural as well.
Finally, pray each day for someone you would like to influence for eternity. Pray for a family member, friend, coworker, neighbor, or someone who has wandered away from the Lord. Then keep your eyes open for the opportunity God may place before you.
You may never know how much influence one encouraging word, one act of kindness, one invitation, or one faithful example can have. Do something today that makes it easier for someone else to see Jesus.
